The story of our Publishing House “Tamilputhakalayam”

Tamilputhakalayam -Dhagam is a publishing house that was established  at Chennai, India since 1946 by freedom fighter and author Late.Shir.Kana.Muthaiya.

mr.Muthaiya  belonged to a well established Tamil   business family from the village Madagupatti.

He was educated in Sri Lanka,Singapore and later after his father’s sudden demise he was sent to Burma at a very young age  to continue his family business.

It was then that Mr,Muthaya got involved in
India’s freedom struggle and took interest in literature and art as well.

Our founder was a close associate of Netaji subash chandra bose and was working as his second lieutenant in his Indian national Army in Burma.

He later returned to India  as a war prisoner and was released in kolkatta. During his prison days he was introduced to the writings of  the most talented Indian author Rahul sankrithyayan’s works, had letter contacts with him. Muthaya translated two of the works of Rahulji  “valga to ganaga” and “what is communism?” from Hindi to Tamil ( A British officer in prison took lot of effort to help him in his writing venture) . The first book he published was Netaji’s speech “Puratchi”.  These books have become the most acclaimed literary works of modern non fiction Tamil literature.

From then mr.Muthaya introduced a great many books to the Tamil society and published works of many talented authors. He mainly published books on serious literature, society, politics ,feminism, grammar and history. He also concentrated on translations. Though he was a Gandhian by nature, he also published many communist books.

He was a man of great values and he never compromised his publishing for any pressure.

Mr.Muthaiya was involved in establishing a healthy, intellectual Tamil society.  Apart from literary field, he had close contacts with great political leaders  like  shri.nehru, Shri.Baktavatchalam, shri.Kamaraj, shri.C.Subramaniyam.

Our socially committed founder was quiet persistent on publishing very good literary works that would result in the development of society.  Even though he encouraged globalization, he would never publish anything that was against  his national interest.

And he practised gandian way of life till his last breath. He led a simple and humble life.He vehemently opposed caste system, religious differences, language barriers, gender bias, corruption and anti social activities.

Mr.Muthaya’s elder daughter Mrs.Meenakshi Kannan, a chemistry graduate follows his path today and runs the publishing house along with her husband Mr.Akilan Kannan ( the elder son of Eminent Tamil author Akilan) and their two daughters.
